A major challenge to the condor's recovery is the spent lead ammunition that the birds ingest while scavenging on the remains of hunter-shot game. Hunting provides a valuable food source for condors but a characteristic of lead ammunition is fragmentation on impact - and those lead fragments are toxic to all living things.
